Thinking School?
Doesn’t matter what the weather or where you live, August-September makes you think of school. It’s really a season, just like we get ready for fall, winter, spring or summer, you need to get ready for school. To help prepare:
Preschool
School readiness programs usually start around age 3. There are many types to choose from: academic, religious, co-op, public, private, all-day, part day, weekly, a few days... Yikes. Bottom line:
pick a preschool to complement your child’s learning style. In your research, please consider
KidsPark’s Buddy Preschool. Our program is play based and covers all the required academic courses. There is no additional enrollment fee and you pick the days they attend. Pay as you go; our regular rates apply. You can receive a 10% savings by putting money on account.
Kindergarten
The biggest challenge for kindergarteners is the transition to a new school, new children, a new routine, and most likely a different class format. To be ready for day one, visit the school and let your child explore the space. Plan several visits so the physical space begins to feel comfortable. On the first day of school, pack a picture in their lunch to encourage them - maybe a happy face, a heart or even a winner's ribbon. Nothing like a physical reminder that you are thinking of them on this big day.
Elementary
Kids look forward to seeing their friends again but may be apprehensive about new classes. One way to divert their anxiety is to focus on the preparation and the fun of getting new supplies. Doesn’t everyone love new notebooks and pencils? Making the shopping trip less of a chore and more of a treat will set the mood. It is also nice to get the "official" school calendar and let them start to mark important dates (like vacations and in-service days).
All Kids
The week before school starts, wake your child up at the time they will be getting up for school. Have them get dressed, eat breakfast, gather their things and be ready to leave on time. Will the mood be a chaotic race against the clock or calm? If you need a goal for practice – bring them to “school” at KidsPark for a few mornings so they get into the routine of leaving for school and getting there on time. Be sure it is a full dress rehearsal – have them bring their backpack and lunch. Luckily, no homework is required!
